What do the
words kermesse, bravo, amalgame and
grigri have in common? Here is a clue: In March,
not only do we celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Ireland or
the arrival of spring in France (on the 21st March
equinox) but also the Francophonie all
over the world.
That’s right! These words are 4 of the 10 selected for
this year’s
Les 10 mots de la Francophonie.
In the same spirit, we invite you to post on our
Facebook page any
creation of your own inspired by one of the words or
more (poem, illustration, play on words or just a
sentence) and win prices such as tickets to our March
French Film Club and books from our upcoming Literary
Festival!
And of course, the Alliance Française in Dublin will
participate in the celebrations by organising with the
Cultural Service of the French
Embassy its
annual online contest
dedicated to secondary schools and will be on from March
20th to 27th. Until then, we wish you very happy
Francophonie celebrations!

Based on the book by Irene Nemirovsky
and set during the German occupation of France
in the 1940’s, Suite Francaise
tells the story of Lucille Angellier (Michelle
Williams) as she awaits news from her
husband, a prisoner of war. Lucille’s life is
further complicated by the arrival of a refined
German officer, Bruno (Matthias Schoenaerts).
Also starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Ruth
Wilson and Sam Riley, Suite Francaise is
a story about the power of love and the
tragedy of war. |

Jean-Luc Godard continues to do what he’s
done for his entire career, fearlessly
exploring the possibilities of cinema while
consistently provoking audiences. Musing
on language, politics and image, he
presents here a girl, a gun and a dog,
encouraging us to debate about what his film is
about, or if it means anything.
Godard’s experiment in 3D is striking,
playful and unique and he evidently remains a
restless filmmaker with little respect for
boundaries.

Friday 13 March
This
year, the
Alliance Française
has chosen to celebrate the relationship
between Francophone countries through the Art of
Comics. The event, introduced by HE
Philippe Roland, the Belgian Ambassador to
Ireland, will highlight this renowned form of
art with a presentation on the History of
Belgian Comics by Tine Anthoni,
Deputy Director and in charge of Education
services at the
Belgian Comic Strip Center
(BCSC) in Bruxelles and the testimony of
Kevin McSherry, an Irish artist/illustrator
and former chairman of the
Illustrators Guild of
Ireland.
The
Alliance Française
is also proud to launch Les Belles Images
du Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée
(The Beautiful Images of the Belgian Comic Strip
Center), an exhibition created to celebrate the
25 years of this unique Art Centre in Europe.
Many comic strip artists have indeed created
images illustrating the BCSC or use the Center
as the backdrop for comic strip adventures: this
exhibition is a selection of those original
works, testifying the outstanding
creativity and talent of great popular
artists and confirming the richness and
diversity of this artform. |
