Information
Every year, 70
French language assistants
come to Ireland and are posted around the country
to secondary schools to support French
teachers and share their culture and language
with young Irish students. Meanwhile, 40
Irish students are taking up the role
of English assistants in French primary
and secondary schools.
To help support our French language assistants, the
Department of Education
and Skills and the
French Embassy
with the
Belgian Embassy
will be holding an induction and training course
in various venues including the
Alliance Française,
with the
official launch in the
French Library
on October 3rd and workshops on

Prof. Michael Cronin (TCD)
will be in
conversation with Prof. Mary
Gallagher (UCD) on
translating Paul Morand.
For J.-M G. Le Clézio, Hiver
caraïbe (1929) by the
controversial, hyper-European Paul
Morand (1888-1976) is “an important
work […] from an independent,
non-conformist mind”. The stylish
writing fizzes with vivid travel
impressions and with thoughts on
Europe’s shifting place in
what can now be seen as a profoundly
racist, colonialist world order.
And, since Paul Morand explicitly
identifies migration and
miscegenation as the greatest
threats to Europe, his book is a
crucial, if cautionary read for
our own troubled times. That topical
dimension adds greatly to the
aesthetic and intellectual
stimulation provided by the
exuberant writing.

Tuesday 8 October – 6.30pm
Admission free

Alliance Française Dublin
with musicologist
Dr Laura Anderson is organising a
3-movie-cycle called "Disruptive Soundscapes" that will focus this
year on the sound in the French New Wave.
The first film of
the season is Les Cousins (1959), one of the
earliest French New Wave masterpieces which brought its director Claude
Chabrol to critical attention and wide acclaim along with Le Beau
Serge (1958).
In her
post-screening talk, Dr Anderson will situate the soundtrack for
Les Cousins in relation to French New Wave film music and will
discuss the film’s use of original music by Paul Misraki alongside
extensive employment of pre-existing classical music, most notably from Wagner.

Paname,
the ghost
of the Great Frenchman |
Tuesday 15 October – 5.30-7.30pm
Admission free

In
this new workshop, we will look at the concept
of "global simulation", a pedagogical
tool that offers a fictitious framework
conducive to the realisation of social actions.
The fact that the activities have meaning,
are coherent and are aimed at the
realisation of a common project
contributes greatly to the commitment of
the learners.
We will see how to set up an overall
simulation with your classes to create a
developing project over several weeks.
The
workshop will be led by Gaële Mordelet,
Course Director at
Alliance Française Dublin.
Places are limited, so be sure to
book early! |

Alliance Française Dublin is pleased to welcome
the screening of the documentary Paname,
the ghost of the Great Frenchman
directed by Daniel Zapateiro.
In 1879, French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps,
creator of the Suez Canal and
co-founder of the Alliance Française,
embarked on the pharaonic project of the
Panama Canal. But very quickly the attempt
was foiled by epidemics, design flaws
and financial scandals.
In the presence of a descendant of Ferdinand
de Lesseps. |

Fleming's France:
James Bond, a French Passion |

Halloween Cinéclub:
"Les yeux sans visage" |
Wednesday 30 October – 6.30pm
Admission free

With two stories set entirely on
French soil and more than 1,000
references to France, it is clear
that France plays an integral
role in the James Bond series.
Pierre-Olivier Lombarteix’s book
Fleming's France: James Bond,
a French Passion offers a fresh and unique
perspective on the success of the
James Bond novels; Lombarteix sheds
light on Fleming’s body of work
through his examination into the
essential role that France played
throughout the life of Ian Fleming.
Offering a comprehensive insight
into the Bond series, Pierre-Olivier Lombarteix also looks into novels
published after Ian Fleming’s death,
as well as other
fictionalisations and film
adaptations.
Jean-Michel Picard, professor
emeritus in the UCD School of
Languages, Culture and Linguistics,
will host the presentation.

Join us every month for a subtitled
screening of one of the most popular film in French cinema
history, preceded by an informal
presentation with a free glass of wine!
This month for Halloween,
(re)discover the 1960 timeless classic Les yeux sans visage (Eyes
without a face)
directed by revered documentarist and
Cinémathèque Française founder Georges Franju.
Chillingly horrific yet classically poetic,
Les yeux sans visage
disturbed audiences upon its release the way Psycho
and Peeping Tom did in America and Britain. The surrealistic
mixture of the ghastly and the lyrical has been a major influence on
the horror genre. The Cinéclub is free for AF Premium
