Prof. Michael Cronin (TCD) will be in conversation with Prof. Mary Gallagher (UCD) on translating Paul Morand.
For J.-M G. Le Clézio, Hiver caraïbe (1929) by the controversial, hyper-European Paul Morand (1888-1976) is “an important work […] from an independent, non-conformist mind”. The stylish writing fizzes with vivid travel impressions and with thoughts on Europe’s shifting place in what can now be seen as a profoundly racist, colonialist world order. And, since Paul Morand explicitly identifies migration and miscegenation as the greatest threats to Europe, his book is a crucial, if cautionary read for our own troubled times. That topical dimension adds greatly to the aesthetic and intellectual stimulation provided by the exuberant writing.

This month for Halloween, (re)discover the 1960 timeless classic Les yeux sans visage (Eyes without a face) directed by revered documentarist and Cinémathèque Française founder Georges Franju.
Chillingly horrific yet classically poetic,
Les yeux sans visage disturbed audiences upon its release the way Psycho and Peeping Tom did  in America and Britain. The surrealistic mixture of the ghastly and the lyrical has been a major influence on the horror genre.
